Chapter Twenty-Three

Taryn

Instead of the reclined passenger seat that had been my bed for the last several hours, I woke up on a king-sized mattress in a cool, comfortable hotel room. It wasn’t one I’d stayed in before, having become familiar with many hotels over the course of my flight attendant career, but a quick peek through the open curtains let me know we were in Cincinnati.

While I’d never stayed at our current hotel, I recognized the area—Queen City. During longer layovers, I’d spent time at the Hyatt and 21c Museum Hotel. Based on my current vantage point, Asher had set us up in the Marriott at The Banks.

My partner-in-crime was currently asleep, sprawled on a loveseat pullout situated beneath the window, his feet dangling a few inches off the edge. He wore the same clothes I’d last seen him in, and when awake, he put on a brave face. However, fatigue reddened his eyes, altered his posture, and now slowed the rise and fall of his chest.

I slid out of bed at a speed that would make a sloth uncomfortable, and the soles of my feet landed on something plush.

Slippers.

Plush yellow bedroom slippers.

Then I looked up and discovered the second reason Asher slept like the loveseat was a burial plot. Bags littered the hotel room, ranging from the paper, rope handle versions given out at boutiques and retail stores to Target bags spilling over with what looked like toiletries.

I stuck my feet into the slippers, walked over, and went through one of the bullseye bags. Inside, I found a bottle of body wash, shampoo and conditioner from a brand made for my hair type, a hair scarf, and hair accessories. The man had even bought a flat iron and blow dryer, and they weren’t exactly the thirty-dollar kind.

The other bags held everything from face wash to pads and tampons. Unbeknownst to Oliver, I’d had an IUD inserted during one of my periods of freedom—he assumed I was on the pill, but I might as well had been swallowing Tic-Tacs—so those kids he’d been hoping for would have likely never happened. Yet, I wouldn’t have put it past him to grow suspicious and go searching for a string.

Asher’s voice, gravelly from sleep, sounded behind me. “Hey, you’re up. Did you sleep okay?”

I faced him, clutching the bottle of shampoo to my chest. “When did you find time to do all this?”

“Went out while you were sleeping.” He yawned, long arms stretching above his head as he moved into a seated position. “You’ve been knocked out since we passed through Pennsylvania. I had to carry you up here. You don’t remember that?”

“Maybe. A little.” I popped the top on the shampoo and inhaled its clean, fresh scent. “I vaguely remember you telling someone that you’d carry me up rather than trust me to walk.”

“The hotel staff. When I picked you up, you latched on to me, laid your head on my shoulder, and went right back to sleep.”

“Latched on to you?”

“Taryn, I could have tried leaving you with the Secret Service, and you probably wouldn’t have gone.
